Rally on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
The NSS volunteers of
the College participated in a rally on International Day against
Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking organized on 26th June
2013, in Panaji by Positive People in Collaboration with Goa State

Consumer Awareness Program
The Consumer Welfare
Cell of Goa College of Home Science is conducted a Consumer
Awareness Program in commemoration of State Consumer Rights Day in
collaboration with the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer
Affairs from 25th June to 8th July 2013. The
Consumer Welfare Cell organized series of Competitions like Poster
Making Competition, Book Mark Making Competition and Slogan Writing
Competition on topics “My Rights and Responsibilities as a
Consumer”; “I am a Jagrut Grahak” and “Consumer
Cry-out” respectively The Consumer Welfare Cell also conducted
talks on “Consumer Protection Act 1986” and “Weights & Measures” on
4th July 2013 at the College premises. The resource
persons for the talks were Mr. Roland Martins, Co-ordinator, GOACAN
and Mr. V.R. Naik, Controller, Legal Metrology Departments, Panaji.
There was also a three days walk-in Poster Exhibition at the College
premises titled “My Rights and Responsibilities as a Consumer”
from 4th till 6th July 2013. The program was
co-ordinated by Ms. Elizabeth Pereira, Assistant Professor.
Workshop On Communication Skills
Goa’s well-known Corporate Trainer and Life Coach, Pravin Sabnis,
conducted a Workshop on Communication Skills for the students and
staff of the College on 27th June 2013. The Workshop was
conducted as part of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
programme. Ms. Sheryl Afonso e DSouza, Assistant Professor co-ordinated
Mr. Bhushan Bhave was
the Chief Guest at the Inauguration of the NSS Unit of the College
on 6th July 2013. Vanamahotsav Day was also celebrated on
the same day, with the Chief Guest and students planting saplings to
mark the occasion. Asst. Professor & NSS Programme Officer,
Elizabeth Pereira, coordinated the function.
Awareness for LPG Consumers
The NSS Volunteers of
the College held awareness action for LPG Consumers in association
with Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs on 22nd
July 2013. Ms. Elizabeth Pereira, Assistant Professor coordinated
Initiation of the Stress Buster Club
Recognizing that the
rates of suicide in Goa is a disturbing issue, with it being amongst
the top three causes of death among young people aged 15-35 years,
the College endeavours to address this concern among its student
community with the help of a Stress Buster Club, formed under the
aegis of the Students’ Council of the College. Guided by COOJ Mental
Health Foundation, a registered Charitable Trust that works towards
promoting mental health and providing for psychological
rehabilitation services in Goa, the Club was shown direction by Dr.
Peter Castellino, Psychologist of repute and Managing Trustee of
COOJ, and Donna Noronha, Public Relations In-Charge at COOJ. Ms.
Sheryl Afonso e DSouza, Assistant Professor co-ordinated the program
Awareness on Road Safety
The NSS Volunteers of
the College held awareness action on Road Safety at the Kadamba Bus
Stand, Panaji, on the occasion of Road Safety Week (1-7th
August) along with Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs
on 3rd August 2013. Ms. Elizabeth Pereira, Assistant
Professor coordinated the programme.
Workshops on Creative Teaching
“Workshop on Creative
Teaching Techniques and Aids” conducted by Nadisha Coelho, and a
“Workshop on Puppet Making and Creative Art & Craft for Pre-Schools”
conducted by Carren Rodrigues was held for the students of T.Y.B.Sc.
(Human Development). Ms. Anisha Rodrigues conducted a Workshop on
“Lesson Planning & Evaluation” and a “Mock Lesson” demonstration.
All the sessions were coordinated by Asst. Professor Larissa
Session on Financial Planning for Young Investors
With the aim of
directing students towards savings and investment opportunities for
personal and professional growth, the Students’ Council of the
College organized an Interactive Session on “Lessons on Financial
Planning for Young Investors” at the College premises on the 17th
of July 2013. In attendance were the students of the First Year and
the Second Year. The session was conducted by Mrs. Annie Rajan,
Lecturer at Dhempe College of Arts & Science, Miramar, and
empanelled by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) as
Resource Person. Ms. Sheryl Afonso e DSouza, Assistant Professor co-ordinated
Work Culture & Ethics
Corporate Grooming &
Etiquette Consultant, Ms. Charmaine Shackleton Godinho, conducted
the first of a series of Workshops on “Work Culture & Ethics” for
the students of T.Y.B.Sc. The Session focused on etiquettes at the
work place and grooming for interviews and corporate work. The
Workshop was coordinated by Asst. Professor Larissa Rodrigues.
Parents Day and Nature Club Inauguration
A programme to
commemorate Parent’s Day was organized on the 27th of
July 2013, from 10.30 a.m. onwards. The programme revolved around
the theme, “Parenting Gen Y”, Mr. Prakash Kamat, Senior
Correspondent (Goa) of THE HINDU (a popular daily newspaper in
Delhi), was the guest speaker for the occasion. The installation of
Nature Club was also carried out by Shri. Prakash Kamat by
inaugurating the Kitchen Garden along with Parents of the Students
and Staff of the College. Dr. Daisy John & Ms. Larissa Rodrigues,
Assistant Professors coordinated the programme.

The Students Council
of the College Celebrated the Friendship day on Monday, 5th
August 2013. An interclass T-Shirt Designing and Collage Designing
Competitions on theme ‘Friendship’ were held for the students.
On 26th July 2013, the
Goa College of Home Science conducted an inter class debate on the
topic “Is counselling a product of age old practices or is it a
reflection of today’s turbulent times.” The presiding judges for
the day were Dr. Adolf Castelino, Counselor and Psychotherapist, Mrs
Sulata Lotlikar, Counselor and Mrs. Madhavi Shetye, President of the
Rotary Club Panaji Riviera, who was also the Chief Guest of the
event. The debate was conceptualized and coordinated by Ms. Aveena
De Sa, College Counselor.
Inauguration of Students Council
The Students’ Council
of the Goa College of Home Science was recently installed. Principal
of the College, Dr. Mahesh Pai, welcomed the gathering and
introduced the guests. Chief Guest Mrs. Rajal Shinkre administered
the oath of office to the members as she exhorted them to be good
student leaders and conscientious citizens.
Guest of Honour Rtn.
Madhavi Bandekar Shetye, President, Rotary Club, Panaji Riviera,
disbursed scholarships to the deserving students of the College. She
cited how a Rotaract Club and the Students’ Council of a College
helped in nurturing leadership qualities among youngsters. Mrs.
Shetye also released “Footprints”, a monthly Newsletter of the
College, edited by Ms. Sheryl Afonso e DSouza, Asst. Professor and
Chairperson of the Students’ Council. Special Invitee Mrs. Lakshmi
Unny, Asst. Secretary, COOJ Mental Health Foundation, stressed upon
the need for destressing in both youngsters and adults as she
installed members of the Stress Buster Club.
Breast feeding Week
This year’s theme
“Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers”, highlights breast feeding
Peer Counseling. To build awareness about this important cause, the
Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera in association with Goa College of
Home Science, Campal held a series of activities during this week.
On the 2nd of August 2013, a poster making contest was
organized for the students of the college, asking them to highlight
the need and benefits of breastfeeding. on 5th of August
2013, a Quiz on breastfeeding was organized in the college premises.
On 6th July, a talk on breastfeeding was organized for
the women of the village of Goa Velha at the Anganwadi. Mrs. Zhenia
D’Lima, Nutrition Officer from Health Services, brought out the
importance of nutrition, diet and infant-care. Mrs. Vijaya Vernekar
from Integrated Child Development Services outlined the various
Government schemes available. Mrs. Anna Coelho, Peer Counseling
Administrator, provided a practical and scientific insight into
breastfeeding and problems faced. On the 7th of August,
Mrs. Anna Coelho addressed the staff and students of Goa College of
