 Padmashree Dr. S.R. Ranganathan Father of Library Science |
Padmashree Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan was a librarian, mathematician and educator from India. He was born in Siyali (at present, Sirkazhi) in Tanjavoor,
Tamil Nadu.
He began his professional life as a mathematician. His contributions to Library Science have worldwide influence and hence is regarded
as the Father of Library Science in India.
The Government of India awarded Padmashri to Dr. S.R. Ranganathan in the year 1957 for his
valuable contributions.
His Five Laws of Library Science (1931) were widely accepted as a definitive statement of
an ideal of library service.

The Library at Goa College of Home Science houses a collection of books, maps,
magazines and dailies. Nutrition, Clothing & Textile, Human Development being the core subject areas, majority of the collection includes books on the same.
In addition, the library also houses books on other academic subjects such as Psychology, Biochemistry, Physics, English, Research Methodology & Economics .
Dictionaries, encyclopaedias, books on general reading, bound volumes of journals, magazines also form an exclusive part of the collection.
The library is in its nascent stage, but not for long, as steps towards automation and digitization are being progressively taken. This portal being one,
is designed to help users get access to in-house and other online resources.
Library automation, Barcoding of books, barcoded library cards for users and conducting knowledge gaining sessions for users remain in potential plans. |
